Minister Murray, we want Clean Trains Now!
Last September my Private Member’s Bill fighting for the immediate electrification of the Union Pearson Express Air Rail Link was to be debated for the first time, and I believe it would have passed second reading. Days before it came up for debate, Mr. McGuinty announced he was stepping down as Premier.
Unfortunately, this announcement was paired with the news that he would be shutting down the Legislature effective immediately, and all items up for debate were to be cleared from the order paper, including my Clean Trains Bill.
I believe that we now have a new opportunity to work with Premier Kathleen Wynne on this important issue, and I look forward to working with her Minister of Transportation Glen Murray.
Earlier this week, I sent a letter to Minister Murray to share our community’s concerns about diesel trains running through our neighbourhoods, request the immediate electrification of the Union Pearson Express, and ask for him to meet with local representatives. Read the full text of the letter here.
As the Provincial representative for Toronto Centre, Minister Murray should know how desperately our city needs more affordable, accessible transit. The electrification of the UP Express is critical for our health, the health of our planet, and improves our city’s transit network.
I encourage you to send your own letter, email, phone call, or tweet to Minister Murray to make sure that he knows our community is committed to clean, electric trains. You can reach the Minister by email at mto@ontario.ca; by phone at 416-327-9200; and on Twitter @Glen4ONT.
